Interview with a witch...

I have interviewed 3 witches and they all spoke about their experiences of being a witch and how they have been subject to prejudices.

Do you feel accepted by society as a witch?
"To some I do and some I don't. I believe the ones that do accept me are more than likely scared of me. Which I don't like. I am just like anyone else, not to be feared. The fear of witches in the past brought about the Burning Times. I know history will never repeat itself because the witches of today will not let it happen. I do wish people would be more accepting than scared of myself and others. Take time to learn the truth and their fear would disappear."

-This is very truthful of witch craft because it is very misunderstood, of course as will every thing there is the bad/evil side to it but it also had a good and pure side and is very interesting to a lot of people.

Have you experienced prejudice for being a witch?
"Yes, I even experience prejudice in my own family. At one time from my own daughter. She wasn't familiar with what a witch and her religion was truthfully all about. She would tell me straight to my face, "I was going to hell." I would laugh it off and tell her, my religion didn't believe in hell. She finally grew up enough, she got interested in her mother's religion. She has read the blog I write daily and now doesn't tell me I am going to hell. My son grew up thinking momma being a witch was cool. Until he married into a bunch of holier than thou Baptists. All of them are extremely prejudice against me, I would even go so far as to say hate me. I don't have much contact with him anymore. I blame the people he married into and my son, himself. He has three small children and they use them to keep him away from me.

Outside in the real world, I haven't experienced much prejudice at all. There seems like there are more of us coming out of the broom closet each day. I always wear my pentagram and when they see it, it is like a relief to see another one of their kind. They flock to me. The general population of witches are growing and they are beginning to see there is nothing to really fear.

Now on the internet, that is a different story. It seems like individuals tend to be more aggressive when they can hide behind a computer. I have experience quite a bit of prejudice on the net. I have a favorite saying for those people and then they generally hush, "You can't combat ignorance!" Works every time."

- The first time I read this is was close to tears, its such a sad story and such a strong example of how misunderstanding a lifestyle or not talking the time to understand it can destroy a persons life, everyone deserves to be happy and no one should be treated this way.

What is your reason for being a witch?
"I am a Hereditary Witch. That is a witch who has come from a long line of witches. Growing up, I was taught both Witchcraft and the Baptist religion. I was left the option to which Path I would take. I took Witchcraft. The reason I stayed a Witch is because I have felt and experienced my Goddess at work. I know She is alive. She talks to me, She guides me daily and I can actually feel Her Presence with me. I can't say I have ever experience anything like it before. So I know Witchcraft is real. I know the Goddess is real. I have been given proof of that. The Goddess has done things for me that no other Gods of other religions ever have. She showed me the Path I was to take. I took it and all I have to do is put any problems in Her hands. I know She will provide for me and I have nothing to worry about as long as I follow Her and continue to spread Her message."

- This answer is an example of the good side of witchcraft and how it can be a guide for someones life to finding a path and having a life that is essentially worth living. It has got to both worth it if she can withstand all that prejudice from her own family and still follow her Goddess.

These were some of the questions that I asked one of the witches and obviously they were very truthful and moving answers. And a great example of a 'good' witch that should be accepted by society as she has not done anything to hurt anyone with her witch craft.

Stardust Film Review

The passage from this world to the fantasy kingdom of Stormhold is through breach in a wall beside an English village. In the 1800's a boy becomes a man when he ventures through the breach in pursuit of fallen star, to prove his love for the village beauty. The star is no lump of rock, it's a maiden named Yvaine. Tristan, the youth, is not the only one looking for her: three witches, led by Lamia, want her heart to keep them young. And the sons of the dead king of Stormhold want her because she holds the blood diamond that will give one of them title to the throne. Assisting Tristan are his mother, the victim of a spell and a transvestite pirate of the skies. Will Tristan win his true love?

This film did not help me because it was not set in todays society, but it did help me to get a view of how witches were seen at the time that this film was set in. The three main witches in this are seen as evil queens of the dark lands that are there to be feared and to obey without question. This is a valid view of witchcraft in the eyes of a bog standard human because they have no idea the power of witchcraft, how strong it can be within a person and what evil it can bring about to defenceless humans. This film strongly demonstrated the fear mongering within the human race about witchcraft because it is seen as myth and people are scared of the nature of the person who is wielding this power.

The Sorcerers Aprentice Film Review

Balthazar Blake is a master sorcerer in modern day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath. Balthazar can't do it alone so he must find Merlin's chosen one who turns out to be the unlikely David Stutler, a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the force of darkness. It'll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl of his dreams as he becomes Merlin's chosen one and the sorcerers apprentice.

David Stutler's initial reaction to finding out he has been chose to be the sorcerers apprentice shows that witchcraft is not accepted in that society because he didn't want to believe it and he though Balthazar Blake was crazy. This reaction is most likely because witchcraft is seen mostly as evil voodoo magic that is only used by bad people or just myth. David's reluctance to start training after 10 years of knowing he is Merlin's chosen one is an obvious clue to show that magic is not accepted in society as all he wants is to just fit in and if he gets involved in magic he will be an even more out sider than he already is. Magic is there to protect the world and should not be abused by sorcerers.

Practical Magic Film Review

Sally and Gilian Owen have always known they were different. Raised by their aunts after their parents death, the sister grew up in a household that was anything by put typical - their aunts fed them chocolate cake for breakfast and taught them the uses of practical magic. But the invocation of the Owens' sorcery also carries a price - some call it a curse; the men they fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Now adults women with very different personalities, the quiet Sally and the fiery Gilian must use all of their powers to fight the family curse and a swarm of supernatural forces that threatens are lives of all the Owens' women.

Practical magic shows that magic can be very dangerous when used for evil, selfish acts that cause pain and loss but it can bring families together and can make people happy as well. Witches are not accepted at all in society apart from the men that they cast spells on to make them fall in love with them who end up dying in horrible ways because of the Owens curse. This film has helped with my investigation because it is show witches and their craft in the 21st century and how it can apply to today. It has demonstrated that witchcraft is not accepted in society because of the way that people fear it and how it is not understood with people who are not involved with it.

Ink Heart Film Review

Mo Folchart raises his 13 year old daughter Meggie alone after the disappearance of his wife areas. He restores books for a living and travels with Meggie to find an old book called 'Ink Heart' in antique bookshops across Europe. When he is approached by a weird man called Dustfinger, she overhears him calling her father 'silvertongue'. Meggie later discovers that like her father she has the ability to bring characters out of the books to the real world. They escape from Dustfinger heading to Italy to Meggies Aunt Elinor Loredans manor, where the men of the evil Capricorn abduct with the intention of forcing Mo to bring the powerful Shadow to earth.

Proves once again that magic is dangerous in the wrong hands but can save the ones you love in the most dangerous moments. This film wasnt based around how humans accepted the witchcraft of being a silver tongue it was more focused on the dangerous of having this power, so from that aspect it showed that this form of magic would not be accepted within society, but it wasnt helpful within my investigation because it didnt show me the humans views on this power really.

Hocus Pocus Film Review

In the year 1693, sisters, Winifred, Mary and Sarah were executed for their unforgivable witchcraft. They captured and sucked the lives out of the children of Salem to make theme selves young and beautiful. Just before their execution Winifred made a curse - a curse that when a virgin lights the black flame candle on Halloween night, in their house, they shall return. 1993, 300 years later Max decides to light the black flame candle in order to scare his little sister Danny's and his wannabe girlfriend Alison. Now, the three witches are back ready for a night of fun, magic and horror in the now modern Salem.

Hocus Pocus has shown that witches are not accepted in today's society because they are only believed to be myth and associated with evil acts and devil worship. This sort of behaviour is not understood and is not common practice within todays society therefore the fact that is it seen as a Halloween joke to Max and he doesnt believe that if he lights the black flame candle itll bring the witch sisters back to life, and when he does he is faced with the sudden realisation that witches are real. His sister Danny is more accepting of the supernatural because she is younger and is life cynical and more open to new ideas. Therefore this shows that the younger a person is the easier it is for them to accept witch craft and the supernatural but essentially witchcraft is not seen as a true thing in that society. This is shown when Max and Danny go to the party where their parents are and tell them they awoke the witches and they just get laughed at. Which emphasises the point that the younger the person the more accepting of witchcraft they are. They might fear it but they will accept that it is a real thing rather than just being cynical and laughing at the idea.
